New Zealand’s Digital Advertising Market Grows 15% in Q2 2025, Driven by SME Adoption
WELLINGTON, NEW ZEALAND – According to the latest Digital Advertising Index released today by the New Zealand Marketing Association, the country’s digital advertising market has experienced 15% year-over-year growth in the second quarter of 2025, reaching a total valuation of NZD $847 million.
This growth significantly outpaces the 9% increase recorded in the same period last year and marks the strongest quarterly performance since 2021. The surge is primarily attributed to accelerated adoption by small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), which now account for 43% of total digital ad spending—up from 34% in Q2 2024.
Key findings from the report include:
- Social Media Dominance: Advertising spend on platforms like Meta (Facebook/Instagram) and TikTok increased by 22%, now representing 38% of the total digital market.
- Video Content Investment: Video advertising budgets grew by 31%, with YouTube and connected TV platforms seeing the most significant increases.
- Regional Expansion: While Auckland continues to lead with 47% of total spend, Wellington and Christchurch showed the highest growth rates at 18% and 21% respectively.
- Performance Marketing Focus: 67% of advertisers reported shifting budgets toward performance-based campaigns with measurable ROI, up from 54% last year.
“The data confirms a fundamental shift in New Zealand’s marketing landscape,” explained Dr. Rebecca Moore, lead researcher for the Digital Advertising Index. “Smaller businesses are no longer just dipping their toes in digital waters—they’re diving in with sophisticated, data-driven strategies that were once exclusive to large corporations.”
Market Implications:
Industry analysts predict this growth trajectory will continue through 2025, potentially pushing the total market past the NZD $3.5 billion mark for the full year. The increased competition is driving innovation in ad technology and creating new opportunities for specialized agencies.
